Femininity Interrupted Churchills Negative Critique of Powerful Women - Literature Essay Samples

In the play Top Girls, Churchill presents women with power as cynical as it is portrayed that they have abandoned their feminine attributes and womanhood to reach success through the use of male qualities. This idea is particularly evident in the main character of Marlene, as she gives up her daughter and motherhood to pursue a career and power. However, in the play Churchill also integrates characters with little power, such as Kit, to juxtapose the attitude and character type of those who possess power. The pivotal character of the entire play, Marlene, is presented negatively yet she holds a lot of power in her workplace. She is shown to give away her child and the chance to be a mother to pursue a career. She seems cold and selfish as a character and shut off from any instinct of need for a family or love. This is particularly evident when Marlene is interviewing Jeanine in act two, as she advises Jeanine to stray from mentioning a family or wearing a ring in her interview, encouraging her you abandon traits that are common in women’s lives, as she sees that people will believe she cannot balance both. ‘Marlene: So you won’t tell them you’re getting married? / Jeanine: Had I better not? / Marlene: It would probably help’. This dismissive and negative attitude to marriage Marlene holds is cynical as she only views it as a barrier to a career. A feminist would argue that men are able to openly be married and be fathers and still be successful in the ir careers, so women should be able to also, therefore by Marlene encouraging the attitude that it is a barrier, is wrong. However, it is arguable that Marlene is only logical to advise Jeanine in this area as at the time the play is set women only held 30% of ‘management’ jobs and the pay gap, particularly under Thatcher was growing. Another aspect of Marlene’s character that is presented in a cynical and negative way is how she takes on male attributes to reach success. In many ways, such as her conversation type or her relationships with other people, she ignores her female gender, as if it’s only a barrier. For example, when Angie enters Marlene’s work place, she hardly reacts and continues her firm and professional attitude. When she is speaking to Angie the quantity of what she is saying is still bare, with short replies such as ‘Yes I am’ and ‘Well we’ll see’, as if she would rather stay professional than be kind and motherly around her own daughter, presenting how her career is more important. This creates a truly cynical and closed off portrayal of Marlene. She continues this attitude towards Angie when she criticizes her and believes she will only make it as a ‘packer in Tesco’, putting down her own daughter, very much reflecting the bour geois feminist that she is. This attitude of a woman in power is reflective of the prime minister of the time Margaret Thatcher. Marlene feels the need to present herself as firm and tough to compete with men in the workplace which is also exemplified when win says ‘Tough birds like us’, as if it is a badge of honour to be a ‘tough’ woman, the word ‘tough’ particularly mirroring a characteristic associated with men being significant here also. The way Thatcher was viewed as the ‘iron lady’ and Marlene’s cold, selfish attitude particularly mirror each other, as it is clear that at the time many women saw it necessary to create a masculine exterior through the way they dress, converse and treat others, to succeed. Furthermore, it is interesting that by Marlene gaining a bigger role in the agency it would be thought that this would be a landmark for other women to start gaining more equal treatment within their jobs compared to men, however by Marlene filling this job it is clear that is more of a barrier for other women to reach roles of importance as it can be seen that as long as they have a woman in those roles, they do not need any more to create an equal image of the agency, this is displayed in act two when Win and Nell says, ‘There’s not a lot of room upward’ ‘Marlene’s filled it up’. This is also evident in Thatcher’s time in power as many saw her, as the first female British Prime Minister, to be a leader for feminism, however her time in power was uneventful for women’s rights, and there is evidence to show that the pay gap actually increased. Therefore, it is clear that women in power are presented as negative in the play, as they are portrayed to deny their own gender and do whatever it takes to reach the top. The way Kit is portrayed in the play juxtaposes the women in the who possess power, as she holds such optimism and has true aspirations to have a career that is seen as hard to reach and male dominated, yet she doesn’t hold doubt that her gender will hold her back. When Kit and Joyce are speaking in act two, Kit explains how she would like to be a ‘Nuclear Physicist’, yet her reply from Joyce is very much dismissive as she says ‘whatever for?’ yet Kit’s reply displays how she slightly suppresses this optimism, as she says ‘I could’. The word ‘could’ truly presents how people in society are already oppressing her desires to pursue a profession that is seen as ‘hard to reach’ for women in the 80s. At this point Kit hasn’t let society stunt her aspirations, which is why, even though she’s a character who holds little power, she is presented as the antithesis to many other women in the play as sh e doesn’t give in to societies views at the time that women shouldn’t desire such high up jobs, an attitude that is particularly obtained by Joyce. Churchill creates a range of characters in the play to present, in a nutshell, the different types of attitudes people would hold to women in society in the 80s and even throughout history. She creates a negative image of women who have abandoned their feminine attributes as they feel it will hold them back from big careers, but also creates a negative image of women who have accepted the possible barriers their gender has created and have given in to societies beliefs that they cannot be truly women and successful. The way Churchill hasn’t casted one male actor in the whole play echoes this message as it shows that women can make it without having to relate, compare or compete with men. Therefore, overall the message that women in the play that have power are negative and cynical that Churchill creates reflects on the issues facing society in the 80s and critiques women much like Joyce or Marlene that see their gender as a barrier.

Just like the Anti-V1V2 BnAbs RV144 V2 mAbs, RV144 V2 mAbs were also found to bind the same V2 Env reg ion. A point that was found in the studies with RV144 V1 mAbs is that like Anti-V1V2 BnAbs they cannot bind glycans and also the V2 region where the mAbs can bind shows variation in their conformation. This is mainly due to the fact that Anti-V1V2 BnAbs have a beta strand but the mAbs have an alpha helix. However, it has raised the vaccine induced immune to near about 50 % showing a progress in the field of HIV vaccine. This has raised expectations that V2-antibody-mediated ADCC of infected CD4+ T cells can thereby act as a potential mechanism of protection against HIV. However, an aspect that has been found here is that in presence of the low tier anti Env IgA antibodies, the antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) shows inverse correlation with infection risk in RV144 which thereby shows that anti-Env IgA antibodies reduces the protective effects of IgG antibodies and activities of CD4+ T cell helper responses (Streeck et al., 2013). Understanding Crime in Canada

Question: What are the main methods (or tools) that criminologists use to measure crime rates and crime trends? Are crime rates trending upwards, downwards or staying about the same? Which crime categories (if any) are experiencing declines, which crime categories (if any) are experiencing increases, and which are staying about the same? Do the different types of measurement tools provide the same picture of crime rates and crime trends, or are the pictures different, and if so, why? Which crime measurement tool do you think is most reliable, and why? Answer: Like many other developed countries, in Canada also, the crime is measured with the help of a combination of the information provided by the police and reported by the victim. Although, individually each of these sources has its own strengths and limitations but together they are able to provide a much robust measure of crime rate and trends in Canada (Walker, 1999). There are a wide range of measurements used by the criminologists in order to examine statistics related with crime. In case of each of these tools, the respective measurements are derived from different aggregations of the data related with crime. The result is that in several cases, the crime rate in Canada is depicted in a way that is quite opposite to the objective reality. It also needs to be noted in this regard that the crime trends are not static entity and therefore they undergo considerable changes as a result of several social, political and economic factors (Boyd, 2015). There are certain methods that are generally used by the criminologists in order to measure the rate of crime and the trends related with crime. These main methods are the Uniform Crime Report, Crime Severity Investigation and General Social Survey. For example the Uniform Crime Report presents the uniform crime reporting statistics. In case of UCR, all aggregated data is collected. Moreover, UCR is incidence based. However there is a problem related with the UCR. According to this issue, UCR is not capable of accounting for the dark figures of crime. The dark figures of crime are related with the variations that are present between the number of crimes that have taken place and the crimes that have been reported to the authorities. In this way, this figure shows the large number of crimes that have not been reported (Fox, ed. 1981). On the other hand, the General Social Survey is conducted over the telephone. In this survey, questions related with crime or victimization is asked fro m the individuals that have not been reported in the Uniform Crime reports. Although, generally the crime rate is going down but there are certain areas in which this rate is increasing. For example, recent trends revealed that there is an increase in violent crimes. On the other hand, the crimes like vehicle theft are witnessing a downward trend, perhaps due to the mandatory measures introduced by the government. In the same way, the recent trends revealed that there has been a decrease in the number of homicides but at the same time, there has been an increase in the cases of assault. Some factors can be cited in support of the decreasing rate of these crimes. For example, significant improvements have been made in emergency medical care. At the same time, the young people have become more risk tolerant. Similarly, as a result of the Internet, young people stay at home more often instead of going out. On the other hand, the rising popularity of Internet has also resulted in the crimes that take place on t he Internet itself (Jones, 2006). It is widely knowledge that the same results are not provided by different types of measurement tools when it comes to the crime rates and trends. The reason is that all these tools measure different things. For example, the Uniform Crime Report is based on the statistics of crime that are available with the police. Therefore the crime rate and trends depicted by the UCR also reflect the attitude and the opinions of the police officers and the policies and procedures adopted by them. For example, sometimes the police officers do not report significant instances of crime if they are capable of dealing with such instances effectively. On the other hand, this problem is effectively dealt with by victimization surveys as these surveys report the crimes in which the police is not involved. At this point, it needs to be noted that a large number of crimes are not reported to the police. In this way these surveys help in providing the vital information related with crime. But at the same ti me, there is also a problem associated with the service because in case of many crimes that have not been reported to the police, the people do not report these crimes during the survey conducted on the telephone (Maxfield, 1995). On the basis of the above discussion, it can be said that the most efficient crime measurement tool which is also the most reliable should have the features of Uniform Crime Report and also that of the General Social Survey. At the same time it is very important that the measurements of crime should include the crimes that have been reported as well as the crimes that have not been reported to the police (Burgess and Akers, 1966). In this way, instead of having different measurements for the crime rate and friends, the focus should be on including everything in a single measurement. It also needs to be noted in this regard that the statistics reported by the police and the victimization data are complementary to each other and if these two sources are used jointly, they can provide a more comprehensive picture of the crime rate and trends in Canada. As a result of the differences that are present in the methodology used by these two types of surveys, it is difficult to make a direct comparison. But it can certainly be said that the ways in which crime is measured in Canada can be improved further. By improving the tools that are used for measuring crime in Canada, the understanding regarding the nature and the extent of crime will also improve (Sampson, Groves and Byron, 1989). With the help of these improvements, and also by including Crime Severity Index to the present measurement tools, it is possible to have a more comprehensive picture regarding the nature and extent of crime in Canada. According to Frieden, Dietz, and Collins, implementing legislation that heavily taxes unhealthy food will help reduce consumption of these foods. Decreasing the cost of healthy foods, subsidizing farmer’s markets in underprivileged areas, creating zoning legislation that prohibits the building of fast food restaurants in the vicinity of schools and recreation areas, prohibition of unhealthy food advertisements directed at children, requiring restaurants to offer healthy food options for kids with the nutritional information listed on the menu, increase active transportation and recreation, and improve physical activity programs will also reduce childhood obesity (Frieden, Dietz, Collins, 2010). The difficulty in implementing these solutions is monetary and political. The businesses negatively affected by these changes will fight against them and the cost of subsidizing groceries for the impoverished areas will cost. Childhood Obesity: Empirical Evidence The empirical evidence that supports childhood obesity policy prioritization is unhealthy food advertising directed at children and the impact it has on childhood obesity. The IOM conducted research on this subject and concluded that â€Å"statistically, there is strong evidence that exposure to television advertising is associated with adiposity in children ages 2-11 and teens ages 12-18 (Beales, 2010). I believe that this would be difficult to infer, without considering all of the other pertinent factors. For example, Frieden, et al state that the average high school graduate will have spent about 15,000–18,000 hours watching TV but only 12,000 hours in school (Frieden, et al. , 2010). Regardless of food advertising, the amount of time sedentary in front of a TV would be a contributing factor. In addition, dietary consumption, availability of healthy food and a safe place to engage in physical activity contribute. Childhood Obesity: How to Keep Current Many organizations are publicizing the current state of research and legislation for childhood obesity. The National Conference of State Legislatures provides postings of current childhood obesity legislation. It categorizes the policies by Body Mass Index, School, Task Force, Taxes, Raising Awareness, and a variety of other affiliated legislation. The site also breaks down the fifty states by their involvement in this legislation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has update literature on the progress on childhood obesity. It lists categories regarding the source of the problem, what groups of professionals (i. e. doctors and nurses, federal government, state government, and families) can do to help, and the science behind the problem. The Office of Legislative Policy and Analysis (OLPA), a division of the National Institute of Health, have a site that updates information on S. -799 – The Prevention of Childhood Obesity Act that was put into place by Senator Kennedy in 2006. Programs can be established that engage the individuals in the community to participate in healthy events that would be fun. By acting at the community level, the effects will reach individuals, community, and eventually be recognized at federal and global levels. Conclusion Childhood obesity is a global pandemic with vast repercussions, including a multitude of health disorders and incredible financial burden. More dynamic problem-solving and implementation of the proposed recommendations need to be completed. Keeping current on childhood obesity legislation and research is critical in abolishing the disorder. Several organizations have websites that contain facts about issues regarding obesity, updates on legislation, and articles on evidence-based practices and programs implementing them. Understanding the research and legislation will help when facilitating process improvement initiatives at all levels, with concentration at the community level.
